March 2024 Bryn Athyn Thrift Shop Building Update

Exactly one year ago yesterday, April 1, was the last day that BATS was open to shoppers in the beloved old barn. Amazing! Much has happened since then including, among other things: setting aside some pieces of the barn and decor to be reinstalled in the new barn and dismantling of the old barn, as well as amazing progress in the construction of our new barn on Buck Rd.
The new barn is lovely and well along the path of construction, more so than many people had expected, based on the comments that have been shared. We do not have an opening date yet, but it does seem realistic to think that we will open in the fall. We can’t wait!
Since closing last year, we have had several days of taking donations as well as two “pop-up sales” in the BACS gym, most recently on March 16. BATS was open for business for 6 hours and made $7,073 in that short amount of time on the sale of jewelry, clothing, décor, household items, some books, hardware, and various other items. There were so very many happy customers and workers!
We don’t see having more pop-up sales before reopening but we will have more donation days (not yet scheduled) so that we will be able to stock BATS for our reopening and for our returning and new customers.
Stay tuned! You will be updated along the way. ~ Brenna Synnestvedt, BATS Manager

History

The Bryn Athyn Thrift Shop (BATS), was established in 1993 to benefit the many uses of the Bryn Athyn Church and Elementary School. In May 2023, the 125-year-old barn located at 510 Tomlinson Road, right next to the Bryn Athyn Church School was taken down to make way for a new elementary school and church offices.

BATS will be moving to a new location, slated to open in late 2024, and will be located at 3370 Buck Road, Bryn Athyn.  The new thrift shop will be temperature- controlled, have an easily accessible retail space, and have one convenient drop-off location. The interior will be reminiscent of our former shop, including reclaimed wood and décor from the old barn. Its exterior will blend in with the surrounding farmland.
