Community Supper: “150 Years of New Church Life”
On Saturday evening, April 25th we will have our next Community Supper in Asplundh Assembly Hall. Bring your own food and a dessert to share if able, and listen to and discuss an interesting presentation. Details below.

Topic: “150 Years of New Church Life“
New Church Life is a bimonthly magazine devoted to the teachings revealed through Emanuel Swedenborg. It is the official journal of the General Church of the New Jerusalem and has been published continuously since 1881. Bruce Henderson, Editor, and Rev. Jeremy Simons, Spiritual Editor, will talk about its history, highlights and future.
Schedule for the Evening
5:30 pm – Doors Open
6:00 pm – Welcome, Blessing, Eating Supper
6:30 pm – History and Highlights of New Church Life
7:00 pm – Break for Dessert
7:15 pm – How New Church Life has Changed and the Future of New Church Life
7:30 pm – Q & A with Bruce and Jeremy
8:00 pm – End of the formal program
After 8:00 pm – More time for informal conversation for those that choose to linger and help with clean up.
All these times are approximate.
What if I just want to come listen to the speakers?
Sitting and talking with other people is a big part of the point of these evenings, however, if you’re only able to come for the program this time, come a little before 6:30 pm and leave whenever you need to.
Food
Supper – Bring Your Own
For supper, bring your own food from home or get takeout from a local restaurant. We will NOT be offering any meals at this event.
Potluck Dessert
If you’re able to, please bring a dessert to share (it doesn’t have to be homemade). We will provide some store-bought desserts.
Alcohol
BYOB
Room Layout
There will be long, rectangular tables, running from the back of Asplundh Assembly Hall up to the stage. This means that everyone can sit with the people they came with and also be together at the same table with a larger group.
About the Speakers
Bruce Henderson
Born in Australia, the son of Rev. Cairns and Eva Henderson, Bruce graduated from the Academy Boys School, Bryn Athyn College, and Penn State. After a nearly 40-year career in journalism, in 1999 he started working as Director of Development then Communication for the Academy and General Church. He has written three books for the church, including Window to Eternity and Why Does God Let It Happen? He has served as Editor of New Church Life since 2011.
Rev. Jeremy Simons
A fourth generation General Church minister, Jeremy was born in Bryn Athyn, ordained in 1982, and is the former head pastor of Kempton New Church and Bryn Athyn Church. He is currently retired and lives in Bryn Athyn with his wife Allyn Edmonds. He has served as Spiritual Editor of New Church Life since 2020.
Childcare – No Childcare Provided But Babysitting Subsidy Available
We are not providing childcare for this Community Supper. We are happy to contribute $25 towards babysitting costs; please let us know if you would like help with that.
7th Grade and Up Invited
We invite people in 7th Grade and up to attend. Teenagers will be expected to stay with their parents for the duration of the evening (not eat quickly and then go outside to hang out with their friends). We don’t want unsupervised teenagers wandering around the property. The point is for teenagers to come and be part of the Community Supper, from the beginning to the end. We will leave it to parents to determine whether their teenagers would enjoy coming to this event and being part of conversations with adults or not.
Recorded But Not Live-Streamed
We will record this event and put an edited version of it on the Bryn Athyn Church YouTube channel, within a week or two. We will not be live-streaming this event.
RSVP – Not Required
You do not have to RSVP to come to the Community Supper. You can decide at the last minute to come, even if you haven’t told anyone that you were planning to come.

Using the Calendar
It Will Display Differently on Your Phone
Some of the features of this calendar only work when viewing on a bigger screen. If you’re on a phone, look for these icons to search and change your view.
![]()
When you tap on the magnifying glass, a search box will appear. Use the icon on the right to change between month and list views. List view is recommended for mobile use.
Reload the Page If It’s Not Working
If the calendar is behaving strangely, start over again by clicking here.
Click on an Event for More Information
Many events have more details than will display at first. On a computer you can hold your mouse over an event title to see a summary of the description. On a computer or a phone, if you click the title of the event it will display more information, often including links to the full details for the event – the location, the cost of the event, where to buy tickets, etc.
Search
There’s a search box that you can use to search for when specific events are (e.g. you could search for Community Worship to know when the next Community Worship services are). It doesn’t work to search for a specific date to see what’s happening on that date. After you search, make sure that you’re in List View to see events from more than the current month.
Go to a Specific Date
To jump to a specific date, click the ⌄ next to today’s date and select the date or month you want to go to.
Other Notes
This is kind of clunky
Yup. This calendar isn’t as good-looking or user-friendly as it could be but we decided to make it available to you anyway, before we have all the bugs worked out. If you might be able to help make it work better, please get in touch (malcolm.smith@brynathynchurch.org).
Want to Add Something to the Calendar?
Before you contact us to add something to the calendar, please read these notes:
- This calendar is for events happening in the 19009 zip code and generally for events at least somewhat associated with the Bryn Athyn Church or General Church.
- This calendar is for events that are relevant to a large group of people. We are not, for example, including the complete ANC Secondary Schools athletics calendars in this community calendar because all of those games would not be relevant to a large enough group of people. (You can, however, find links to that calendar below.)
- We reserve the right to remove your event or not add your event to the calendar.
- Rather than adding your events manually we would prefer you to set up a digital calendar and then send us the feed from it so that we can add your events automatically.
