SUMMARY:Informal Family Service Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 7th there will be a community meeting after the service (starting at about 11:15). If you can’t make it in person\, you can join using the Zoom link for the regular 11:30 discussion: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87473872195 \nIf you plan to come in person\, you’re welcome to bring snacks and/or beverages for sharing. (Post-service refreshments are always potluck these days – thanks to everyone who has brought food to share! – and we’d like to make a special effort for the community meeting since we’ll be sticking around a little longer than usual.) \nThis is our first community meeting in the new space; it will give us an opportunity to reflect on the last four months and talk about what has gone well\, what challenges we face\, and how we can continue to grow together. \nHope to see you there! \nAll the best\,\nColeman and Anne Grace

SUMMARY:Rise Above It Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A 10-month program that will take you deeper into the joy of living the 10 commandments. \nWould you like to improve your life? Your relationships? Are you ready for some breakthroughs? If so\, we’ve got good news for you! \nBryn Athyn Church will be focusing on the Ten Commandments this school year in several of our worship services and special events. A significant part of this focus will be inviting you to join large and small groups to study and practice the Ten Commandments using the book “Rise Above It.” We are thrilled to have the authors Rev. Ray and Star Silverman leading this effort! \nThis program will continue throughout the school year\, meeting once monthly\, with all the small groups together. Ray and Star will present the information and lead us through the activities\, while participants sit with their group for discussion and to complete the tasks. Small groups can be a rotating collection of people\, or you can sign up with a specific leader or with your ready-made group of eight. Groups have the option to meet with just themselves partway through the month for discussion\, inspiration\, and community building. \nHere is a little more information about Rev. Ray and Star Silverman’s book: \nIf you want to enter into life – a joyful\, peaceful\, vibrant\, and deeply spiritual life – the path is simple: believe in God and keep the commandments. Sometimes\, however\, this is easier said than done. \nThis book explores each of the Ten Commandments and demonstrates how we can apply them in our daily lives. Drawing from different sacred texts\, including the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg\, this book shows how\, by living a life according to the commandments\, we can be happier here on earth and continue into the next life. \nFilled with candid and inspiring journal entries from seminar participants\, and enriched by the teachings of the great religions\, this book invites you to enter into a life of ever-increasing love\, wisdom\, and service. \nVisit www.brynathynchurch.org/riseaboveit to learn more about the program.

SUMMARY:Community Supper: "150 Years of New Church Life"
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday evening\, April 25th we will have our next Community Supper in Asplundh Assembly Hall. Bring your own food and a dessert to share if able\, and listen to and discuss an interesting presentation. Details below. \n\n \nTopic: “150 Years of New Church Life“\nNew Church Life is a bimonthly magazine devoted to the teachings revealed through Emanuel Swedenborg. It is the official journal of the General Church of the New Jerusalem and has been published continuously since 1881. Bruce Henderson\, Editor\, and Rev. Jeremy Simons\, Spiritual Editor\, will talk about its history\, highlights and future. \n\nSchedule for the Evening\n5:30 pm – Doors Open\n6:00 pm – Welcome\, Blessing\, Eating Supper\n6:30 pm – History and Highlights of New Church Life\n7:00 pm – Break for Dessert\n7:15 pm – How New Church Life has Changed and the Future of New Church Life\n7:30 pm – Q & A with Bruce and Jeremy\n8:00 pm – End of the formal program\nAfter 8:00 pm – More time for informal conversation for those that choose to linger and help with clean up. \nAll these times are approximate. \nWhat if I just want to come listen to the speakers?\nSitting and talking with other people is a big part of the point of these evenings\, however\, if you’re only able to come for the program this time\, come a little before 6:30 pm and leave whenever you need to. \n\nFood\nSupper – Bring Your Own\nFor supper\, bring your own food from home or get takeout from a local restaurant. We will NOT be offering any meals at this event. \nPotluck Dessert\nIf you’re able to\, please bring a dessert to share (it doesn’t have to be homemade). We will provide some store-bought desserts. \nAlcohol\nBYOB \n\nRoom Layout\nThere will be long\, rectangular tables\, running from the back of Asplundh Assembly Hall up to the stage. This means that everyone can sit with the people they came with and also be together at the same table with a larger group. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nBruce Henderson\nBorn in Australia\, the son of Rev. Cairns and Eva Henderson\, Bruce graduated from the Academy Boys School\, Bryn Athyn College\, and Penn State. After a nearly 40-year career in journalism\, in 1999 he started working as Director of Development then Communication for the Academy and General Church. He has written three books for the church\, including Window to Eternity and Why Does God Let It Happen? He has served as Editor of New Church Life since 2011. \nRev. Jeremy Simons\nA fourth generation General Church minister\, Jeremy was born in Bryn Athyn\, ordained in 1982\, and is the former head pastor of Kempton New Church and Bryn Athyn Church. He is currently retired and lives in Bryn Athyn with his wife Allyn Edmonds. He has served as Spiritual Editor of New Church Life since 2020. \n\nChildcare – No Childcare Provided But Babysitting Subsidy Available\nWe are not providing childcare for this Community Supper. We are happy to contribute $25 towards babysitting costs; please let us know if you would like help with that. \n\n7th Grade and Up Invited\nWe invite people in 7th Grade and up to attend. Teenagers will be expected to stay with their parents for the duration of the evening (not eat quickly and then go outside to hang out with their friends). We don’t want unsupervised teenagers wandering around the property. The point is for teenagers to come and be part of the Community Supper\, from the beginning to the end. We will leave it to parents to determine whether their teenagers would enjoy coming to this event and being part of conversations with adults or not. \n\nRecorded But Not Live-Streamed\nWe will record this event and put an edited version of it on the Bryn Athyn Church YouTube channel\, within a week or two. We will not be live-streaming this event. \n\nRSVP – Not Required\nYou do not have to RSVP to come to the Community Supper. You can decide at the last minute to come\, even if you haven’t told anyone that you were planning to come. \n\nLearn More about Community Suppers\nRead more about our Community Suppers and view past events. Community Supper – Bryn Athyn Church \n\nCome\, and Invite Your Friends!\nWe hope that you’ll come to the supper and program\, or just the program. We also hope that you’ll invite your friends.

SUMMARY:Informal Maundy Thursday Holy Supper (AAH)
DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 7:00 pm – Asplundh Assembly Hall\nInformal Family Holy Supper Service\nRev. Nathan Gladish \nEveryone is welcome to participate in a special worship service often referred to as Maundy Thursday\, which will include the Holy Supper. For a little background on the term\, see the *footnote at the bottom.\nThe service will be held in the lobby of Asplundh Assembly Hall (not the big room)\, to help provide a comfortable setting. The activity is planned for 7:00-7:30 pm with live music by Lori Odhner starting at about 6:50 pm. Come early to get settled\, and you are welcome to linger afterwards to sing or socialize. Children are welcome. \nThe first part of the service will focus on sharing food for our bodies as well as food for thought. Some items will be provided – crackers\, grapes\, cheese\, juice\, and water. Feel free to bring other food to share. Quotations from the Word on individual cards will also be available as food for thought – for reflection and for conversation. Alternatively\, feel free to bring a special quotation of your choice to share. \nThe second part of the service will focus on the sacrament of the Holy Supper. Both unleavened wheat bread and gluten-free bread will be available as well as wine\, grape juice\, and water. The service will close with prayer and a blessing. \nAlthough Christians have often included a tradition of foot washing in Maundy Thursday services\, we will not include it this year. \nThis event will not be livestreamed or recorded because of it being held in the lobby. For livestream options\, visit www.brynathynchurch.org.easter on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. \n*From the Wikipedia article about Maundy Thursday:\nThe English word maundy in the name for the day is derived through Middle English and Old French mandé\, from the Latin mandatum (also the origin of the English word “mandate”). It is the first word of the Latin phrase “Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos\,” translated as “A new commandment I give to you: That you love one another\, as I have loved you.”
