Sunset Organ Vespers

Bryn Athyn Church is offering a new series of monthly Sunday evening organ vespers from June through September. Here is what you can expect at the second one which is on Sunday, July 16, at 7:30 pm:

Organist Leah Martin and Rev. Jeremy Simons
• Doors will open one-half hour before the vespers.
• We expect many visitors as this series has been widely advertised in the Philadelphia area.
• There are no preludes and there will likely be some conversation in the nave beforehand. An announcement from Graham Bier will alert people that we are near the start time and our beloved Deagan tower chimes will sound as a call to silence and worship.
• Rev. Jeremy Simons will offer an opening prayer and brief readings interspersed throughout on the theme, “Follow the Light.”
• Leah Martin, organ student at St. Jacob’s School of Music in Indiana, will play musical selections by Léon Boëllmann, J.S. Bach, Herbert Howells, Jacques Boyvin, Maurice Duruflé and Ned Rorem.
• There will be a special selection with Sarah Martin on cello.
• The full colors of the organ will be used during the hour long program. Please sit further in the back pews if you are concerned about the volume.
• The west door will remain open throughout the vespers for those who would like to watch the setting sun. (Note though that optimal listening is inside the nave and the vespers will end at sunset.)
• Freewill donations can be placed in the offertory bowls at the end of the vespers.
• The grounds will remain open until 9:30 pm for viewing the sunset and gardens. Special Cathedral lighting will go on after sunset.
