Update: Executive Bishop Nomination Process

From Rev. Eric Carswell, Head Pastor
March 5, 2018

This coming June the members of the Council of the Clergy will be nominating a person to serve as the next Executive Bishop when our current Executive Bishop, Brian Keith, steps down at the end of June 2019.
Each pastor has been asked to seek input from the people he serves as a background for his role in this process. I am grateful for the input I have received or has been received by other members of the Bryn Athyn pastoral staff.
In order to be a nominee, a priest needs to have agreed to be a nominee, and receive the nominations of at least two other members of the clergy.
In previous selection processes after the clergy have considered and debated the nominees, they have chosen a single nominee. Then his name has gone to the GCNJ Board for their consideration and affirmation or, although this has not yet happened previously, their request for reconsideration. In our last process the board received Brian Keith’s name, his CV or resume, a blended overview of reasons given by the priests who nominated him, his vision for the church and his responses to a number of questions proposed by the board members. The board then asked for time to reflect on it until the next day before responding.
In this selection process the GCNJ Board has asked for a change in this process. They asked for information about the nominees prior to their meeting this month so that they would have an opportunity for more considered input. A number of the board members are hopeful, and in fact expect, that their response or feedback would be something to the effect of, “we could work with any of these people.”
The GCNJ Board as well as the clergy have now received the names of all six priests who have been nominated. The board has also received the CVs and blended nomination statements for all the nominees. In a week or so, the board will also receive from all the nominees answers to a series of questions they have proposed related to the future bishop’s leadership in roles related to the GCNJ Board’s work.
We have also agreed that once these names have been released to the clergy and GCNJ Board, then they can be published for all to know. The nominees, in alphabetical order and with their ages and current roles are:
• Erik Buss (52), Assistant Pastor of Bryn Athyn Church
• Peter Buss, Jr (50), Assistant to the Bishop
• Glenn “Mac” Frazier (47), Associate Pastor of Glenview New Church
• Bradley Heinrichs (50), Head Pastor of Carmel New Church and School, EVP of General Church in Canada
• David Lindrooth (55), Director of General Church Outreach
• Derrick Lumsden (35), Pastor of Sower’s Chapel in Sarver, PA
