“See That You Are Not Troubled”

From Rev. John Odhner, Assistant to the Pastor
October 5, 2020

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars…. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:6-12)
Many Christians wonder if this year’s events are signs of the Second Coming. The New Church perspective is that the Lord was prophesying events that actually took place in 1757 in the spiritual world. The Last Judgment has already happened. The end of the age is history. We can look back and say that the Lord has already brought the human race through the most troubled and dangerous time in history. We survived. We are OK.
Yes, there continue to be challenges, threats, and dangers. Yet the Lord advised when things like this begin to happen, “See that you are not troubled.” (Matthew 24:6) “People in the stream of providence are being carried along constantly towards happier things, whatever appearance the means may present.” (Secrets of Heaven 8478) “In this world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
