Just Right

From Rev. Erik Buss, Assistant to the Pastor

We all know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Papa bear’s porridge was too hot, and mama bear’s porridge was too cold, but baby bear’s was just right. I doubt many of you would say the weather recently has been just right. It’s been a very hot summer, with records being set all around the world. I am noticing plants in my garden in distress when they have never been so in the past.
The Lord says that in heaven the temperature is just right. Temperatures are generally like those in springtime (Divine Love and Wisdom 104-105), and even though there is variety, it is like the variety in temperate zones, without extremes (Arcana Coelestia 935). By contrast, in hell it is alternately “misty and filthy, and in cold, that sometimes burns with the heat of passions” (Spiritual Experiences Minor 4682). So the extreme temperature we’ve been having is not a good reflection of what heaven is like.
It is interesting that peace in heaven in compared to springtime (Arcana Coelestia 1726, 5052; Heaven and Hell 289). There is something relaxing and peaceful about temperatures that are just right, when heat and light are balanced (Married Love 137:4-5). Plants grow effortlessly and without distress and this mirrors the way the Lord wants to create effortless growth in a balanced, peaceful way.
Some people seem to keep their inner balance even when things are hot around them. They offer us a gift of a balanced perspective when others may burn with anger or indignant opinions. The weather has not been conducive to that inner balance, but the Lord is constantly flowing into our hearts with a perfect balance of love and wisdom, a springtime of peace and joy and hope. Our task is to find the space within ourselves to receive it and the peace that comes with it.
