Healing Disease with Disease

From Rev. John Odhner, Assistant to the Pastor
March 30, 2020

It is never the Lord’s will that people suffer from disease. The Lord’s only goal is our eternal happiness, and everything that comes from Him is good—all the time, to all people. “The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.” (Psalm 145:9) The literal sense of the Word speaks at times of the Lord sending plagues and disease on people, but this is speaking according to the appearance. In fact, diseases are from hell, not from the Lord. Healing is the only desire of the Lord, “Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies….” (Psalm 103:3-4)
Many people are working feverishly to find a vaccine for this new disease. The first vaccine was discovered by Edward Jenner, who found that innoculating people with the relatively mild cowpox virus gave them immunity to the similar but deadly smallpox virus. (That’s why the word “vaccine” comes from vacca, the Latin word for “cow.”
This current coronavirus is deadlier than the usual coronaviruses we have had around, but it is not nearly as deadly as spiritual diseases, because the virus can hurt or kill our body, but spiritual diseases can hurt or destroy our soul. “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:28) One reason why the Lord allows natural diseases to spread is that we can learn from them about spiritual diseases and how to avoid them. If we learn these lessons, natural disease can in a way innoculate us against spiritual disease.
“All evils are contagious. They are like a plague you become infected with just by breathing in and out.” (True Christianity 120) This passage gives examples: “As you spend time with thieves or pirates you eventually become like them.” (An excuse that many give is, “Everyone does it.” One survey discovered that 95% of employees steal from their employers.) “As you live among adulterous men and promiscuous women, eventually you think nothing of adultery.” (Again, watching pornography is contagious: “Everyone does it.”) “If you join a rebel group, eventually you think nothing of doing violence to anyone.” (Hate and violence are contagious, so hate groups beget hate groups.)
Many of these evils are like COVID-19, in that they are contagious even when symptoms are not showing. “Pornography doesn’t hurt anyone.” Actually, it can destroy marriages, families, souls, eternal happiness, but the symptoms don’t show right away, so it can easily spread from person to person.
One way to keep spiritual diseases from spreading is through spiritual washing. “Who can ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? One who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.” (Psalm 24:3-4) “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your

doings from before My eyes.” (Isaiah 1:16) “Wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?” (Jeremiah 4:14) “Evils cannot possibly be washed away by water, but by repentance.” (Secrets of Heaven 10235) “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.” (Psalm 51:2)
