Finding Rest

From Rev. Erik Buss, Assistant to the Pastor

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

These words are so amazing because our lives do not feel restful much of the time. There are all the external worries about peace and political bickering, the challenges of meeting our expectations and duties in the limited time we have, and the need to respect the choices of those around us when they differ from ours. And then there are our own inner burdens – the powerful attacks from the hells trying to convince us not to carry on, or to act in ways that are inappropriate. Yet the Lord’s words are true. His yoke is easy, His burden light.
“As soon as the good of love has been implanted, conflict comes to an end, and rest takes over; for now the person is brought into heaven and is led by the Lord.” (Arcana Caelestia 8893) Wouldn’t it be nice if that could happen tomorrow and we could see an end to conflict? I know I yearn for that at times.
I think the Lord sees it differently. He sees each individual struggle as a movement toward rest. We struggle with impatience because a particular hellish community attacks us. As we struggle with the heavy burden and turn to the Lord, He lifts it from us and over a period of time we gain rest from that particular community. In a while there is another nearby community that will attack us and it will feel like the same kind of impatience, but it’s actually different. We struggle with that, and the Lord lifts that burden, and gives us His easy yoke. Over time, as the Lord protects us from more and more communities of impatience we gain a growing space of rest in our lives.
The Lord would not want to take away all our struggle today, because it is through that struggle and feeling burdened that we learn to turn to Him. And in turning to Him we gain greater peace and rest, and that is His easy yoke.
