Finding Hope Event

From Rev. Eric Carswell, Head Pastor
March 18, 2019

Saturday, April 6, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Have you ever been knocked over with grief? Have you ever had that moment when something traumatic has happened to someone you love and you’ve been paralyzed–unsure of what to say or how to help? Have you ever felt isolated because of experiences around loss, addiction, abuse, or mental illness?

Perhaps you know the observation: “When people who are perceptive have feelings of compassion they know that they are being alerted by the Lord to offer help (Arcana Caelestia 6737) We also are taught: “God loves every one of us but cannot directly benefit us; He can benefit us only indirectly through each other. For this reason He inspires us with His love, just as he inspires parents with love for their children (True Christian Religion 457:3). As individuals and in what we do as a congregation we want to be alert to the best ways to attend to and serve people in ways large and small, especially in some of the most challenging times in life. When trauma happens, we want to look to the Lord, try to have open eyes to see what we can do individually as well as rallying together as a community. We can also seek the guidance of additional resources and care of non-profit organizations and communities around us.

Toward this end, Bryn Athyn Church has been the lead on coordinating a collaborative event, Finding Hope, to create space to explore topics we don’t often talk about (suicide, domestic violence, addiction, sexual abuse and mental illness). The focus of this year’s event is expanding our capacity to be present with each other in hard times.

This is our fourth year offering Finding Hope and is based on your input from previous years. This year’s program will be shorter (9:00 am-1:00pm), featuring a new speaker, Dr. Sandra Bloom from Drexel University. There will be new workshop offerings that include experiential learning.

Bronwen Henry is the lead coordinator of this event with collaboration from Abington Hospital, Growth Opportunity Center, Gloria Dei Church, NewChurch LIVE, and Bryn Athyn College.

As head pastor of Bryn Athyn Church, I warmly invite you to attend this event. It is an inspirational, informational, and moving space. All are welcome.

With care,

Eric Carswell
