Organist News

Sunday, September 7, 2014,  was bittersweet, as Betsy Walsh (pictured with two of her grandchildren), played the organ for the final time as Assistant Organist at Bryn Athyn Cathedral.  Betsy dedicated much time and effort to learning and practicing this complex instrument, studying first with Terry Schnarr and Michael Sheerin, and later with David Furniss.  She began playing services at the Cathedral 16 years ago, and has been a constant presence on the organ bench ever since, providing inspiring and uplifting music for weddings, funerals and worship services beyond count.  For the past year, Betsy has been living in Albany, NY, and we are doubly grateful that she continued to commute down and support the music program here with her playing.  Thank you, Betsy, for all you have done over the years for the Bryn Athyn Church, and we hope you will come back to visit us often! Bryan Dunnewald will be our new Assistant Organist.  Bryan has been an organ scholar at Central UMC in Traverse City, MI, and Assistant Organist at Trinity UMC in Denver, CO as well as a substitute organist for many prominent Colorado churches.  He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy and now studies at the Curtis Institute of Music.  In 2013, Bryan won the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival Competition.  He is excited to learn more about the New Church and to become a part of our community.  My gratitude to the members of the search committee: Eric Carswell, Erik Buss, Terry Schnarr, Dorothy Brown and Jennifer Cole for their diligent work in this process.
