SUMMARY:Community Supper: "150 Years of New Church Life"
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday evening\, April 25th we will have our next Community Supper in Asplundh Assembly Hall. Bring your own food and a dessert to share if able\, and listen to and discuss an interesting presentation. Details below. \n\n \nTopic: “150 Years of New Church Life“\nNew Church Life is a bimonthly magazine devoted to the teachings revealed through Emanuel Swedenborg. It is the official journal of the General Church of the New Jerusalem and has been published continuously since 1881. Bruce Henderson\, Editor\, and Rev. Jeremy Simons\, Spiritual Editor\, will talk about its history\, highlights and future. \n\nSchedule for the Evening\n5:30 pm – Doors Open\n6:00 pm – Welcome\, Blessing\, Eating Supper\n6:30 pm – History and Highlights of New Church Life\n7:00 pm – Break for Dessert\n7:15 pm – How New Church Life has Changed and the Future of New Church Life\n7:30 pm – Q & A with Bruce and Jeremy\n8:00 pm – End of the formal program\nAfter 8:00 pm – More time for informal conversation for those that choose to linger and help with clean up. \nAll these times are approximate. \nWhat if I just want to come listen to the speakers?\nSitting and talking with other people is a big part of the point of these evenings\, however\, if you’re only able to come for the program this time\, come a little before 6:30 pm and leave whenever you need to. \n\nFood\nSupper – Bring Your Own\nFor supper\, bring your own food from home or get takeout from a local restaurant. We will NOT be offering any meals at this event. \nPotluck Dessert\nIf you’re able to\, please bring a dessert to share (it doesn’t have to be homemade). We will provide some store-bought desserts. \nAlcohol\nBYOB \n\nRoom Layout\nThere will be long\, rectangular tables\, running from the back of Asplundh Assembly Hall up to the stage. This means that everyone can sit with the people they came with and also be together at the same table with a larger group. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nBruce Henderson\nBorn in Australia\, the son of Rev. Cairns and Eva Henderson\, Bruce graduated from the Academy Boys School\, Bryn Athyn College\, and Penn State. After a nearly 40-year career in journalism\, in 1999 he started working as Director of Development then Communication for the Academy and General Church. He has written three books for the church\, including Window to Eternity and Why Does God Let It Happen? He has served as Editor of New Church Life since 2011. \nRev. Jeremy Simons\nA fourth generation General Church minister\, Jeremy was born in Bryn Athyn\, ordained in 1982\, and is the former head pastor of Kempton New Church and Bryn Athyn Church. He is currently retired and lives in Bryn Athyn with his wife Allyn Edmonds. He has served as Spiritual Editor of New Church Life since 2020. \n\nChildcare – No Childcare Provided But Babysitting Subsidy Available\nWe are not providing childcare for this Community Supper. We are happy to contribute $25 towards babysitting costs; please let us know if you would like help with that. \n\n7th Grade and Up Invited\nWe invite people in 7th Grade and up to attend. Teenagers will be expected to stay with their parents for the duration of the evening (not eat quickly and then go outside to hang out with their friends). We don’t want unsupervised teenagers wandering around the property. The point is for teenagers to come and be part of the Community Supper\, from the beginning to the end. We will leave it to parents to determine whether their teenagers would enjoy coming to this event and being part of conversations with adults or not. \n\nRecorded But Not Live-Streamed\nWe will record this event and put an edited version of it on the Bryn Athyn Church YouTube channel\, within a week or two. We will not be live-streaming this event. \n\nRSVP – Not Required\nYou do not have to RSVP to come to the Community Supper. You can decide at the last minute to come\, even if you haven’t told anyone that you were planning to come. \n\nLearn More about Community Suppers\nRead more about our Community Suppers and view past events. Community Supper – Bryn Athyn Church \n\nCome\, and Invite Your Friends!\nWe hope that you’ll come to the supper and program\, or just the program. We also hope that you’ll invite your friends.

SUMMARY:New Church Day Picnic & Pageant
DESCRIPTION:General\n\n\n\n– 6:00 – 7:30 pm – Picnic\n– 7:30 – 8:00 pm – Pageant\n– 8:00 – 8:15 pm – Gifts\n– 8:15 – 10:15 pm – Lighting and Music \nDress Code \nYou do not need to dress up for this event. It will be quite hot and humid so please wear whatever is comfortable (though inside the cathedral is air conditioned). A number of people enjoy wearing New Church colors (red and white). \nSecurity \nWe want to welcome people who are coming for this event; we want to preserve a worshipful sphere during the pageant; and we want to keep people safe. We will have security stationed around the property\, but we also ask you not to leave your valuables (including children) unattended. \n\n\n\n\nPicnic\nBring a picnic and eat and socialize with other people on the west lawn of the Cathedral\, overlooking the valley. Feel free to drive to the parking lot near the lawn to drop off your things. If you are able-bodied\, please do not park in the closest lot. \nFree ice cream (from Tanner Brothers Dairy) will be available to all attendees (1 per person). It will be served from about 6:30 pm in the cloister area. Please do not take it inside. \nPlease put all of your trash in the trash cans around the area. \nPageant\nDoors will open to the nave and preludes will start at 7:15 pm. The service will start at 7:30 pm. \nThe pageant is a series of scenes from the book of Revelation. Some of the scenes can be scary to children. It lasts about half an hour. \nThe Service Will Not Be Live-streamed \nThe pageant will not be live-streamed because we use copyrighted recorded music. However\, you can come and watch the service on the TV in the Social Hall if you can’t find a good seat in the nave. \nOffertory\nThis is a worship service so there will be offertory bowls which will go toward supporting the pageant. \nJoin in the Singing \nThere are two hymns in the pageant and also two short excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. You are invited to sing along with all of it. There are learning tracks for the Messiah excerpts here and there will be sheet music available during the service. \nWe also have new learning tracks for the two hymns in the pageant on the Bryn Athyn Church Music YouTube Channel: \n– “The Lord God Jesus Christ Doth Reign!” \n– “Jerusalem\, the Golden!” \n\n\n\n\nGifts\nThere will be New Church Day gifts for the children in our congregation from infants through 8th grade to celebrate that “the Lord God Jesus Christ reigns\, whose kingdom shall be for ages and ages.” These gifts have been specially selected and will hopefully fill a special use in connecting your family to the New Church.\n\nGifts for all ages will be available for pickup in the Social Hall after the pageant (around 8:00 pm).\n\n\nThese gifts are for the grade that your child just finished. All children (including visitors from other New Church congregations) who are present at the pageant can collect a gift. They must come to receive the gift themselves (or with an adult if necessary). \n\nAnyone picking up a gift for a child\, who is not present\, must wait until all the gifts have been handed out.\n\nChildren who are part of our congregation that were unable to come to the New Church Day celebration\, can pick up their gift on June 22nd or 29th\, after the Cathedral Family Service. Andrea Cranch or Brooke Brown will be there to give your child their gift.\n\nNOTE: Cathedral staff members do not hand out the gifts. If you have questions about the gifts\, please contact Brooke (336-509-4970) or Andrea (215-828-1462).\n\n\n\n\nLighting and Music (8:15 – 10:15 pm)\nAfter the pageant is over\, you are invited to enjoy strolling around the grounds of the Cathedral\, while classical music plays. Ordinarily people are not allowed on the Cathedral property after sunset\, but on the 19th (and for Landmarks in Lights on the 24th) the Cathedral is specially lit and you are invited to stay till 10:15 pm. Once the last piece of music ends\, we ask that you promptly exit the property. If the weather is not cooperating\, we may have to delay or cancel the music.
